  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Climate-Space reccap2: Global Land Carbon Budget and its Attribution to Regional Drivers The 2015 UNFCCC Paris Agreement calls for a periodic Global Stocktake (GST) of progress towards meeting its aims, taking place every five years, starting in 2023. At national level, Parties have agreed to commit to nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that they intend to achieve regarding their future GHG emissions reductions. The GST consists of reporting on (i) progress on achieving the NDCs, (ii) adaptation efforts, and (iii) finance flows supporting developing nations. The intention is to progressively strengthen mitigation commitments, adaptation efforts, and financial flows during each five-year cycle, until the Paris agreement's three objectives are achieved. The first GST started in 2021 and will be completed by 2023, followed by an update of NDCs after two years (2025), with the whole process repeated every 5 years. The GST requires rapid developments in the capabilities to quantify annual GHG emissions and removals consistently from the global to the national scale and improvements to national GHG inventories.Understandingthe size and dynamics of the emissions from fossil fuels and their partitioning among the atmosphere, land and ocean has been at the heart of the carbon-cycle research community for the last decade. Since the Paris Agreement, quantifying and attributing sources and sinks of greenhouse gases also became of high societal importance, given that it is essential in the definition and evaluation ofclimate mitigation goals. New capabilities are needed for accurate attribution of sources and sinks and their trends to natural andanthropogenic processes. Space-based earth observation (EO) information has the potential to contribute to achieving the Paris mitigation and adaptation objectives in many ways, including feeding into the Stocktake process. The focus of this new activity is to investigate the requirements and RD activities needed for the development of satellite EO-based ECV to support countries reporting and the NDC process of the UNFCCC Paris agreement GST, as well as to provide regular and timely adequate updates for the UNFCCC GlobalStocktake of the Paris Agreement by combining bottom up' regional GHG budgets informed by EO based-ECVs with top down' inversions, separating in each approach the anthropogenic fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O and the natural flux in accordance with best available science.Read more
